Tesla Is Utilizing Big Box Adaptive Reuse To Open Larger Service Centers
Recent Tesla service center repurposes have included 100,000+ square foot buildings once used as distribution centers, Kmart stores and even movie theaters
Extended service wait times have long been an issue for many Tesla owners.
So much so that Tesla responded by building hundreds of service centers across the U.S.
Including ~70 service centers that opened in Q3 2024 alone.
But Tesla is not just opening new service centers — it is opening larger facilities that are roughly double the size of the centers that opened just last year.
And Tesla has turned to the adaptive reuse of existing buildings to develop these larger service centers.
Such as the three examples highlighted below that are each over 100,000 square feet.
3) Tesla Service Center - St. Petersburg, Florida
One of Tesla’s first large service centers opened in St Petersburg, Florida in early 2023.
It was a repurpose of the 100,000 square foot Kane’s Furniture liquidation center that was located on a 4 acre site.
Tesla converted the building into a multi-use facility that includes a 3,000 square foot showroom, a 40,0000 square foot service facility, a 7,000 square foot parts department and a 50,000 square foot area used for vehicle storage.
2) Tesla Service Center - North Hollywood, California
A 117,000 square foot former Kmart in North Hollywood, CA is in the process of being repurposed as a Tesla showroom and service center.
The building — which sits on a ~10 acre site — will include a collision center, paint booths and a large indoor area dedicated to car delivery and customer pickup.
1) Future Tesla Service Center - Chatsworth, California
Another of Tesla’s large service center projects may be perhaps its most unique adaptive reuse to-date:
The proposed repurpose of the 118,000 square foot former Pacific Theatre in Chatsworth, CA.
Tesla plans to demolish the interior of the former theater and convert the building and property into a car delivery hub and service center.
This unique project is under way and expected to open in the coming months.
