In an era when the number of U.S. movie theaters is shrinking, Roadhouse Cinemas of Tucson, Arizona is expanding.
Including into space formerly occupied by Big Box retailers.
Like Bed Bath & Beyond.
In 2014 Roadhouse opened the first dine-in movie theater in Tucson when it repurposed a six screen cinema in a 23,000 square foot space at the Crossroads Shopping Center.
Three new screens were added during a 10,000 square foot expansion in 2017.
And now Roadhouse is taking over the 37,000 square foot former Bed Bath & Beyond that is located on the other side of its current west wall in the shopping center.
Adding the former Bed Bath & Beyond space will double its size - but Roadhouse is planning to include more than just additional theaters in the new space.
Roadhouse’s expansion area will be named Rail Yard and include 14 bowling lanes, an axe-throwing area, an arcade and even Topgolf Swing Suites.
It also plans to add 4 or 5 “room-sized” theaters with about 10 seats each that can be reserved by individual parties for private viewings.
The Rail Yard will be similar to a concept that Roadhouse introduced at its third location in Colorado Springs, Colorado
The Colorado Springs Roadhouse Cinema + Rail Yard location opened in 2020.
It too was a repurpose and adaptive reuse of former Big Box retail space - a retrofit of part of a former Kmart building.
And one of more than a dozen former Kmart properties that have since been converted into movie theaters and family entertainment centers.
