This Former Toys R Us Is One Step Closer To Becoming A Medical Center
The long planned conversion of a former Florida Toys R Us into an integrated medical center is now in motion
Sometimes adaptive reuse projects take a long time.
Like the proposed repurpose of a former Toys R Us store in Royal Palm Beach, Florida into an integrated care medical center operated by Baptist Health.
Baptist Health South Florida acquired the 58,000 square foot former Toys R Us building for ~$16 MM in January 2019.
Now nearly six years after Baptist Health acquired the property, plans appear to be moving forward for the adaptive reuse.
Last month the Royal Palm Beach Planning Commission approved a site plan and architectural details for the proposed "integrated care center."
The healthcare facility is set to include ~31,000 square feet of area for outpatient services, ambulatory surgery, diagnostic imaging, lab facilities and physician offices.
The remaining ~27,000 square feet of the building will be a 24/7 emergency room with 18 beds.
Once complete the Baptist Health Integrated Care Center will be one of nearly a dozen former Toys R Us stores that have been repurposed for medical uses.
Other examples of these repurposes include:
The 47,000 square foot former Toys R Us in Lancaster, Pennsylvania that has been repurposed as the Lancaster Pediatric Center operated by Penn State Health;
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs primary care clinic in Des Moines, Iowa that provides care to over 30,000 veterans in Central Iowa and is an adaptive reuse of a 42,000 square foot former Toys R Us store; and
The North Pinellas VA Clinic in Clearwater, Florida that provides primary care, women’s health services and a secluded mental health center in a converted former Toys R Us store.
So when will the former Toys R Us in Royal Palm Beach finally be converted into the integrated medical center?
Now that all zoning variances have been obtained, Baptist Health plans to go before City Council in the coming weeks to secure final Project approvals.
